CERT05: Storyboarding & Animatics (Core course)
Storytelling and filmmaking essentials that set the scene for animated filmmaking. Animatics take storyboarding forward by one stage towards final animation by establishing a real-time understanding of filmic pace and continuity.
CERT06: Layouts & Staging (Core course)
The importance of laying out animation scenes and character location within the scene is established here.
CERT07: Principles of Animation (Core course)
How animation works and how to apply its enduring principles to movement - as established through over 100 years of practice and experience.
CERT08: The Art of Walks (Core course)
It is said that if an animator can successfully animate a walk then they can animate almost anything as a good walking action contains many of the core principles of movement. Starts with 'Generic Walks' then comprehensively moves on to personality and character walks.
CERT09: Introduction to ToonBoom Studio (Elective)
Vector-based digital technologies are prevalent in the traditional 2D animation industry today - with ToonBoom software being the tool of choice by most professional studios and individuals alike. This course introduces students to the most popular program in the ToonBoom Technologies toolkit.
CERT10: Introduction to Maya (Elective)
It is most likely the that majority of animation students will end up as CG-based 3D animators in the games or film industry. The most respected software for 3D animation is Autodesk's "Maya", so here students will learn the rudiments of CG modeling, rigging, unwrapping, texturing and animation.
CERT11: Animation Production (Elective)
When you know how to animate, how do you make a film using what you have learned? All the principles of production and filmmaking presented here - using the mainstream Hollywood model and the adapted needs of the independent filmmaker.
CERT12: Motion Comics (Elective)
The new medium of animated cartoons, comics and graphic novels embrace aspects of storytelling, design, illustration and animation. All these things are explored here, plus much more instruction for the self-motivated, independent animator.
To achieve a 'FOUNDATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN ANIMATION':
Certificate students: Are required to successfully complete all 7 'Core' courses, plus 3 'Electives' of their own choice. To succeed in a course students to complete all the required work in each course and then submit a final assignment. Each final submission will be reviewed, critiqued and mentored where necessary, to ensure the work is sufficiently good enough for a passing grade. When students have achieved all these requirements for each of the 10 required courses they will be awarded a signed, printed certificate that can be framed and displayed on their wall or personal website.
Non-Certificate students: Are able to purchase as many individual courses as they choose - but will not be required to submit a final assignment. One-on-one instructor mentoring and feedback will be available for individual course work if required - but it will be charged at an agreed hourly rate.
